Vladimir Balakay
Donetsk
painter Vladimir Balakay is known by connoisseurs of art. Since 1958
he has given art exhibitions in Donetsk, Kiev and Moscow. He
exhibited his paintings in the countries of Eastern Europe. His canvases
are present in private art collections in Germany, England, Greece and
Italy. Vladimir Balakay won the Arhip Kuindji memorial
prize in 1998 and was in the "City and People" exhibition in
Donetsk in 2003.
A master of scenery and portraiture, he has been creating the philosophical cycle "The Thoughts of Godsent" during the last ten years. The cycle unites 60 works dedicated to the two thousandth anniversary of Christianity. These paintings are not Bible illustration. They are thoughts of the past, the present and the future of humanity.
“We live in hard times”, says the painter. “The Twentieth century is not only the space exploration epoch but it is also the epoch of the golden calf. This is probably the reason for fratricidal wars, poverty and the destruction of numerous Christian sanctuaries. The result is in the denial of a faith and the high destiny of humanity. The severe shock suffered by humanity doesn't need empathy. A human being must see the light and draw a conclusion.
Balakay’s creative work is not embellishment. His works call to people's consciences and minds. The painter’s creative credo is given by his life. He was born in 1929 in a teacher's family in Styla village in Donetsk region. His father and grandfather built the church on their own account. Then they were deported to Siberia and the church was blown up in the thirties of last century. The wreckage of the bell tower still lies in the center of Styla village. In 1937 his father was executed. His mother also died. Vladimir Balakay was reared by the family of Donetsk opera and ballet theatre painter Eduard Lyachovich. Eduard Lyachovich was his first drawing teacher. Than Vladimir Balakay graduated from the artistic college in Kiev and the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi. He worked for a long time in the Donetsk Artistic Foundation. The cycle "The Thoughts of Godsent" is opened by the works "Temple is Like Bread, and Bread is Like Temple", "The Cradle of Civilization", "The Hands of Space", "Sword of Damocles", "The Opportunity of Flight From The Red Book", "The Crossing of Motherhood", "Over the Book of Remain", "The History of Heart", "The Introduction of Confession". The author says that these works are the sounds of the soul, which determine the level of our moral stability. Balakay's philosophical paintings are anxious and piercing, like the times. These paintings show tragedy and belief in the individual's future at the same time.
